Health Care Reform, Auto Insurance, and You
I’m not an automobile.
Obama and his minions have put forth the idea that since in many states automobile insurance is mandatory under penalty of law, why should health insurance be any different. After all, they argue, it is important to maintain coverage and not put your illnesses on the backs of everyone else.
Hogwash.
I haven’t heard confront them with the fact that in this country, driving is a privilege, not a right. Every booklet in each state in which I’ve lived emphasizes this fact.
On the other hand, living in this country as a free person is a right.
So what’s the difference?
Any state can and does mandate that its citizens have – at the very least – liability insurance for their cars. If they want to take on the responsibility of owning a vehicle, then they must ensure that they fulfill their responsibilities by carrying sufficient insurance. Mandates are always tricky, however, since for the most part, responsible people are going to carry insurance anyway because they don’t want to be sued in case of an incident. I have always carried insurance, and it didn’t matter if there was a law on the books or not.
With that being said, states – to the best of my knowledge – don’t tell you specifically where to get your insurance. Further, if you don’t want insurance and have deep pockets, you can file a certificate of financial responsibility with the state DMV and don’t have to carry it.
People who can’t afford or want cars – which often happens in large cities with public transportation – won’t buy them. Those who do own a car but can’t afford the insurance won’t drive their vehicles. Once again, it is a privilege with attendant responsibilities.
The House and Senate are putting bills through their respective processes which will in effect make the price of living in this country a government-approved health insurance policy. You don’t want a policy? Too bad. You will be fined and can go to jail. That is, if you’re a typical, law-abiding, taxpaying citizen.
If you’re on the public dole or an illegal, you’ll get subsidies. No need to worry about jail. That’s where the reluctant taxpayers will be.
This seems like an atrocious violation of the Constitution. Where does it state that Congress or the President have the right to make us buy what they say we must buy in order to live as a free person in this country? Since when has insurance been the cost of what we must pay in order to live here? This isn’t health reform, it’s an admission fee! If we to continue to compare it to automobile insurance, it’s an easy leap to the realization that our government wants us, the American people, to pay for a license to live in this country.
If you haven’t written to your folks in Washington yet, I think it’s time you did. Send a real letter, emails, faxes, Passenger Pigeons, whatever. This is an abomination of the legislative process, and they’re only getting started. They obviously don’t care that they’re overstepping Constitutional bounds. They’ve been getting away with it for far too long, and will continue to do so until they are voted out of office. The arrogant attitudes of the Nancy Pelosi, Barney Frank, and Harry Reid types (who voted for these people anyway??) is just the proverbial tip of the iceberg.
If the electorate doesn’t do anything and this abomination of a bill (either House – pick one) goes through, then we can wave our final freedoms goodbye.
Otherwise, I hope you like wearing orange jumpsuits.
